Ravichandran Ashwin Defends Comments on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Role in T20I Series
Clarification on Sooryavanshi's Bench Role
Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian off-spinner, has addressed his comments regarding Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's position on the bench during the recent T20I series against Ireland, where India faced a 0-2 defeat in Belfast under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.
Despite being part of the squad, Sooryavanshi did not play in the matches, which led to speculation about his potential debut. Following the first T20I, Ashwin remarked that being on the sidelines could provide the young player with valuable insights, suggesting that he could learn a lot by observing and assisting his teammates, even in minor roles like carrying water.
Backlash and Clarification
Ashwin's remarks ignited a wave of criticism from fans and cricket analysts who believed his comments undermined the significance of a talented player who has shown remarkable skill in domestic cricket and the IPL.
In response to the backlash, Ashwin took to his YouTube channel, 'Ash Ki Baat', to clarify his stance. He emphasized that his comments were misinterpreted and that carrying water for teammates is a traditional part of cricket culture and should not be seen as demeaning.
He stated, "We need to give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi time. The way he played in the IPL, obviously, you will have to play him at some point. He is that special. What I am saying is that carrying water is not degrading."
Historical Context
Ashwin questioned the negative perception surrounding the act of carrying water, reminiscing about his own experiences as a ballboy in Chennai during the 1990s and 2000s, where he felt pride in supporting the players.
He asked, "Why do people think carrying water is a bad thing? When did the ethos of cricket change?"
Sooryavanshi's Future with Team India
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was also named in the squad for the upcoming T20I series against England, with the first match scheduled for July 1 at Chester-Le-Street in Durham. However, his debut remains uncertain.
Ahead of the match, captain Shreyas Iyer refrained from confirming whether the 15-year-old would be part of the playing XI, stating that team selection is a private matter.
Iyer remarked, "You never know what is going to happen. Our hands are also tied at the moment in terms of what we are going to do. Because this is very private. This is something that we discuss in the team."
He added, "Definitely, he is a brilliant prodigy. And whenever he gets an opportunity to play, definitely, he will do brilliantly."
Anticipation for Sooryavanshi's Debut
The cricket community is eagerly awaiting whether Sooryavanshi will make his debut in the first T20I against England, as discussions about his potential continue to generate excitement among fans.
