Ravi Shastri Endorses Sanju Samson for Future T20I Captaincy
Shastri's Perspective on T20I Leadership
Ravi Shastri, the former coach and all-rounder of India, has expressed his belief that Sanju Samson is a strong contender for the T20I captaincy of the national team. He attributes this to Samson's extensive experience as the former captain of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and his increasing consistency and maturity as a batsman.
Recent Achievements in T20 Cricket
Suryakumar Yadav recently led India to victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup held at home, where Sanju Samson was recognized as the 'Player of the Tournament' after amassing 321 runs in five matches, which included three consecutive half-centuries from the Super Eight match against West Indies to the final against New Zealand.
"Looking ahead to the next T20 World Cup in 2028, India may seek a new captain depending on Suryakumar's performance over the next few years," Shastri remarked during an interview with Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review. He further stated, "Sanju Samson has positioned himself as a potential leader due to his past leadership experience with Rajasthan Royals."
Samson's Impressive IPL Performance
Shastri highlighted that Samson's explosive batting style makes him an essential player in the lineup. He noted, "This is just the beginning of what we can expect from Sanju in the next two to three years." Samson has captained the Rajasthan Royals for five seasons, including the 2022 season when they finished as runners-up.
In the current IPL season, Samson has been in exceptional form, scoring 430 runs in 11 innings with an average of 53.75 and a strike rate of 169.29, which includes two centuries and one half-century.
Addressing Consistency and Maturity
Despite past concerns regarding his consistency, Shastri believes that Samson has addressed these issues, showcasing a new level of maturity in his game this year. He stated, "Samson has silenced all doubts about his consistency. His talent was always evident, but he often fell short of expectations."
"This season, particularly after his standout performance in the T20 World Cup, where he played a crucial role in key matches, his maturity in the IPL further solidifies his case for future leadership," Shastri concluded.
