Rashid Khan's Concerns Over Red-Ball Cricket and Career Longevity
Doctors' Concerns Regarding Red-Ball Cricket
Rashid Khan, Afghanistan's leading spinner, has expressed that red-ball cricket poses significant challenges for him, primarily due to medical advice urging him to avoid it. Despite these warnings, he has pushed through, even bowling extensive spells following his back surgery. However, medical professionals cautioned that continuing in this format could jeopardize his career and overall longevity in cricket. Rashid has been dealing with a lower-back injury since 2023, and Afghanistan is set to face the Indian cricket team in a Test match in June in New Chandigarh.
Reevaluating Test Cricket for Career Sustainability
Rashid mentioned that he is reconsidering his participation in Test cricket due to the intense physical demands, especially after bowling a significant number of overs in recent games. While he remains dedicated to One Day Internationals (ODIs) and aims for a prolonged career with Afghanistan, he intends to manage his workload judiciously to maintain fitness, prevent injuries, and concentrate on key tournaments like the ODI World Cup.
"I will definitely think about it. ODI cricket is something I truly enjoy. I feel fit enough to play ODIs for an extended period with Afghanistan. However, I must be cautious about my playing time to ensure a longer career," he stated.
"In my last two Test matches, I bowled a total of 126 overs, which is excessive. I plan to take a more measured approach and prepare for the World Cup. If I sustain an injury during a Test match, it could hinder my ability to play in numerous Tests. I don't have a specific target for my Test career," he added.
Rashid Khan's Test Performance Overview
Since Afghanistan achieved Test status in 2017, the national team has participated in 12 Test matches, with Rashid Khan playing in only six of them. In these six matches, he has taken 45 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls.
