Disruption in Rajya Sabha Over Police Response to Student Protests

On Wednesday, the Rajya Sabha erupted in chaos as the leader of the house and Union Minister JP Nadda addressed the police's actions during last week's student protest march in Delhi. He characterized the situation as a standard law and order issue and accused the opposition of politicizing and sensationalizing the matter. The controversy ignited when Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, raised concerns about alleged police brutality against the protesting students and demanded accountability for the responsible officials.

Kharge asserted that those who attacked the students are still roaming free and should face consequences. During this exchange, opposition members created a ruckus in the house. Other opposition leaders joined in, calling for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and demanding action against the police officials who ordered the crackdown. Nadda, who had previously engaged with representatives from the Cockroach Public Party alongside Jitendra Singh, was responding to the opposition's request for a statement regarding the police's actions against the protesting students.

He stated that the police acted according to the law to maintain public order. Nadda emphasized in the Rajya Sabha that this was a very typical law and order situation that needed to be understood. The police took action to uphold order, and he added that any student involved in activism must be prepared to face such circumstances. Reflecting on his own experiences, the Union Minister recalled being arrested during the student activism days of the Emergency imposed by the Congress government.

He remarked that it is common for student activists to encounter such situations. Accusing others of exaggerating the incident, Nadda stated, "They are sensationalizing it."
