Introduction to Project Kusha
On January 31, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the indigenous 'Project Kusha' air defense system as a revolutionary advancement for India's security, likening its protective role to the mythical Govardhan mountain. During the inauguration of the Advanced Weapon Systems Complex at the Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, Singh expressed confidence that 'Project Kusha' will be a game-changer for India's defense framework.
Details of the Air Defense System
'Project Kusha' is a long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) defense system developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). It is designed to counter the Russian S-400 system and features three interceptor variants with ranges of 150 km, 250 km, and 400 km. This system is engineered to protect against stealth aircraft, drones, and hypersonic weapons, with operational deployment expected between 2028 and 2030.
Operational Effectiveness
The Defense Minister highlighted that this system demonstrated its effectiveness during 'Operation Sindoor,' a joint military operation initiated in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam in 2025. He emphasized that this world-class indigenous air defense system proved its significance during the operation, akin to how Govardhan mountain safeguarded the Braj region in the Dwapar era.
Multi-Layered Security Features
Singh stressed that 'Project Kusha' offers multi-layered protection against various threats, including stealth aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic weapons. He noted the significant transformations occurring in India's defense sector, highlighting the collaboration among DRDO laboratories, government defense enterprises, private industries, startups, MSMEs, and academia. This collaborative model is expected to accelerate India's journey from innovation to production and operational capability, reflecting the government's strong trust in the development of indigenous defense technology.
Global Security Landscape
Discussing global security challenges, Singh remarked that the world is experiencing instability and turmoil, with conflicts and unrest in various regions, and some areas facing conditions akin to war. The international order is undergoing stress and transformation, with old paradigms breaking down and new alliances and challenges emerging.
