Highlighting India's Maritime Capabilities
On Friday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh boarded the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant shortly after the successful completion of Operation Sindoor, showcasing India's expanding maritime capabilities. This visit was not merely ceremonial; it served as a strategic display of power aimed at India's adversaries, particularly Pakistan, which remains vigilant about the capabilities of this warship.
Current Deployment of INS Vikrant
Currently stationed in the Arabian Sea, INS Vikrant's visit comes weeks after it played a crucial role during Operation Sindoor, led by the Indian Navy's strategic carrier battle group. During his visit, Rajnath Singh reviewed the operational outcomes of the mission and engaged with naval personnel involved in the deployment. His presence is seen as a morale booster for the forces following the successful operation that pressured Pakistan to de-escalate tensions.
Operation Sindoor: A Significant Naval Milestone
The Indian Navy recently concluded Operation Sindoor, a decisive show of strength in the northern Arabian Sea. At the heart of this operation was INS Vikrant, which led a formidable carrier battle group comprising 8 to 10 ships, including stealth-guided missile frigates and destroyers. The coordinated maneuvers at the forefront sent a strong deterrent message to Pakistan.
Role of INS Vikrant in Operation Sindoor
During Operation Sindoor, the Indian Navy deployed its carrier battle group in the northern Arabian Sea, with INS Vikrant at the helm. This group included destroyers and stealth-guided missile frigates, clearly signaling to Pakistan that any escalation would result in the Indian Navy targeting not just its warships but also ground installations. Consequently, the Pakistani Navy refrained from venturing out of the Karachi naval base and called for a ceasefire.
Why Pakistan Fears INS Vikrant
Pakistan's apprehension towards INS Vikrant is well-known. The country's naval capabilities are limited, with fewer than 30 warships at its disposal. In contrast, INS Vikrant, along with its carrier battle group, represents a formidable naval force. Its forward deployment during Operation Sindoor effectively deterred the Pakistani Navy from leaving Karachi port. This vessel can not only target enemy warships at sea but also conduct precise strikes on ground targets using its aircraft and missiles.
Purpose of Rajnath Singh's Visit to INS Vikrant
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to INS Vikrant aims to celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor and boost the morale of naval forces. Prior to this, he met with army and air force officials in Srinagar and Bhuj. His presence aboard INS Vikrant is intended to convey a message of naval strength and reinforce India's defense policy.
About INS Vikrant
INS Vikrant, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹20,000 crores, was commissioned into the Indian Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2022. Designed by the Indian Navy's in-house organization, this warship was built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, a public sector shipyard under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Notably, 76% of the materials used in this 45,000-ton aircraft carrier are indigenous.
