New Delhi, August 3: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh praised India's performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing it as a "historic chapter" in the nation's sports journey, marked by unprecedented achievements and the emergence of a new generation of champions.

In a post on social media, Singh highlighted that India's success reflects the ongoing investment in sports infrastructure, athlete welfare, and grassroots talent under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He stated, "The Commonwealth Games 2026 will be remembered as a historic chapter in India's sports journey, defined by record-breaking performances and the rise of a new generation of champions."

Singh emphasized that under Prime Minister Modi's visionary leadership, India's continuous investment in sports infrastructure and athlete welfare is translating into historic success on the global stage.

Focusing on boxing, he noted that India topped the medal tally in this sport, achieving its best performance ever at the Commonwealth Games.

He remarked, "India secured the top position in the boxing medal table, marking its best performance at the Commonwealth Games. No other country has won as many gold medals in boxing at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games, showcasing India's growing dominance in the ring."

Singh also highlighted India's achievements in athletics, stating that the country recorded its best performance at the Commonwealth Games held outside its home soil.

He mentioned, "Athletics reached unprecedented heights, with India achieving its best performance at the Commonwealth Games held outside the country. Several historic firsts were witnessed, including India's first medal in the men's 5000 meters and 10000 meters, the first decathlon medal, and a historic gold in judo, among other remarkable achievements."

The Defense Minister praised the performance of Indian para-athletes, emphasizing the historic milestones achieved in para-athletics.

He stated, "Para-athletics also reached a historic milestone, with India winning its first Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men's shot put F57 event and achieving the country's first double podium finish in this category, highlighting the growing strength and depth of Indian para-sports."

Congratulating the Indian contingent, Singh remarked that their performance reflects the dedication of athletes, coaches, and support staff, as well as the strength of the country's sports ecosystem.

He concluded, "These remarkable performances showcase the dedication of our athletes, coaches, and support staff, as well as the strength of the sports ecosystem that fosters excellence. Heartfelt congratulations to every member of Team India. The nation is immensely proud of you."

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland formally handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and symbolic baton to India, the host of the historic centenary edition in 2030, during a grand closing ceremony.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games will take place in Ahmedabad, making India the second country after Australia to host this multi-sport event multiple times, having previously hosted the games in New Delhi in 2010.

The Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha, and Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi as part of the official handover ceremony.

India finished fourth in the medal tally with a total of 39 medals - 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze - marking a successful campaign. Although the number of medals was lower than the 61 won in Birmingham in 2022, the context tells a different story.

Thirty of those medals came from events that were removed from the Glasgow program. With only 122 athletes participating compared to 210 four years ago, India maintained its fourth-place position, with an even better medal conversion rate, as 38 athletes returned home with medals.

Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian to win two medals. With the formal handover complete, the focus now shifts to Ahmedabad, which will host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
