Chandrasekhar's Candidacy Gains Approval

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the president of the Kerala BJP, stated that the acceptance of his nomination papers has put an end to the Congress party's speculations regarding alleged irregularities in his election affidavit. Following a thorough investigation that faced no objections, election officials have validated Chandrasekhar's candidacy, indicating that the accusations do not warrant disqualification. This development comes shortly after Congress intensified its claims about Chandrasekhar concealing ownership of a high-value residential property in Bengaluru. In a sharp response, Chandrasekhar challenged Congress to take legal action if they possess solid evidence, accusing the party of resorting to falsehoods for electoral gain and questioning its credibility. He remarked that Congress is once again attempting to mislead voters.

The BJP leader also targeted one of his main opponents in the Nemom constituency, Kerala Minister V. Shivan Kutty, who has been vocal in his criticisms, stating that the repeated allegations reflect a lack of political balance.

Congress's Complaint and Allegations

In a complaint filed with the Election Commission of India, Congress alleged that Chandrasekhar failed to disclose a property worth approximately ₹200 crores in Bengaluru, while claiming in his affidavit that he owned no house. The party demanded his disqualification, presenting documents including tax payment receipts. However, with the formal acceptance of his nomination, the immediate legal and electoral implications appear to be diminishing. Political analysts suggest that while this controversy may remain a topic of discussion during the campaign, the administrative approval strengthens the BJP's position, refocusing electoral issues on core matters ahead of voting.

Following the acceptance of Chandrasekhar's nomination, Shivan Kutty announced plans to initiate legal proceedings against the BJP candidate. In a Facebook post, he accused Chandrasekhar of betraying voters by not disclosing millions in assets in his affidavit, despite tax records revealing ownership of a luxurious home in Bengaluru, which he claimed was a deliberate attempt to undermine the democratic process.

Shivan Kutty's Response and Call for Transparency

Shivan Kutty pointed out that the same property was listed as the candidate's residence during the last Lok Sabha elections. He emphasized that such actions are punishable under the Representation of the People Act and vowed to file a strong election petition regarding the matter. Additionally, he urged the voters of Nemom to stand against corruption and uphold transparency and integrity in public life. In response, Chandrasekhar accused Congress of resorting to lies in their electoral campaign, launching a fierce attack on the party leadership by referencing past controversies and criticizing senior leaders. He noted that Minister Shivan Kutty has been consistently making personal attacks against him, stating, “This is not a new allegation. Such claims arise during every election. People desire development, not disputes.” Voting for Kerala's 140-member assembly is scheduled for April 9.
