Rajasthan Royals Conclude IPL 2026 Journey with Loss to Gujarat Titans
Royals Fall Short in IPL 2026 Finale
The Rajasthan Royals faced a disappointing seven-wicket defeat against the Gujarat Titans, marking the end of their IPL 2026 journey. Kumar Sangakkara, the Director of Cricket and Head Coach for RR, expressed that his team fell short by approximately 10 to 15 runs from their target.
In a post-match media interaction, Sangakkara remarked, "The pitch seemed to improve slightly. Both teams aimed to bat well. It was a used pitch, but surprisingly, it appeared to be more favorable than in the previous match. I believe a score of 215 was defendable. We had a brief opportunity when Sai mishandled a catch. Such small margins can determine the outcome in T20 matches."
He continued, "Gujarat batted exceptionally well and bowled strategically. We were likely 10 to 15 runs short of our ideal score. Despite losing two early wickets, it was a commendable performance from both teams to reach 215, and I commend GT for their achievement."
Gujarat Titans' Record Chase Ends Royals' Hopes
After the Royals batted first, a stellar performance from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 96 runs off 47 balls, along with a quick 38 not out from Donovan Ferreira, helped RR post a total of 214/6 in their 20 overs.
In response, Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill led the chase with a remarkable 104 runs off 53 balls, supported by Sai Sudharsan's 58 runs off 32 balls. Their partnership of 167 runs paved the way for a three-wicket victory.
This match set a new record for the highest target chased in IPL playoffs, surpassing the previous record of 204 runs achieved by Punjab Kings against Mumbai Indians last year. Additionally, this marked GT's highest successful run chase in IPL history, exceeding their 204-run chase against Delhi Capitals in 2025.
Sooryavanshi Shines in Record-Breaking Season
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old batting prodigy, emerged as the season's leading run-scorer with a total of 776 runs across 16 matches. He maintained an impressive average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.31, hitting 63 fours and 72 sixes. Sooryavanshi also became the fastest player to reach 1,000 IPL runs, achieving this milestone in just 440 balls, surpassing West Indies legend Andre Russell, and the second fastest in terms of innings, reaching the mark in 23 innings, just behind Shaun Marsh's record of 21 innings.
Team Effort Recognized by Sangakkara
In the bowling department, Jofra Archer led the way for RR with 25 wickets, finishing as the team's top wicket-taker. When questioned about the team's reliance on Archer and Sooryavanshi, Sangakkara stated, "Every season has standout players, but we've received significant contributions from others as well. Jofra and Vaibhav were pivotal, especially during the powerplay. However, players like Dhruv Jurel also had remarkable seasons."
He added, "Riyan played crucial innings, and Jaiswal had important contributions early in the season. Deshpande bowled critical overs against GT, while Jadeja maintained an impressive economy rate throughout the season. There are numerous examples of players stepping up, which is vital for team success."
Sangakkara Reflects on Team Spirit
Reflecting on the season's highlights, Sangakkara noted, "The way the team united and focused on their roles was commendable. Despite facing injuries and fluctuating performances, they managed to stay composed and focused, which was inspiring to witness."
He concluded, "While skill is essential, I take pride in how these players have given their all for each other, the team, and the franchise. There’s nothing more I could ask for. Sometimes, despite playing well, you can still lose, and today was a testament to GT's superiority. However, I wouldn't want to be in any other dressing room than with these boys at RR."
