Rajasthan Election Commission Denies Voter Awareness Campaign Despite Supreme Court Directive
Election Commission's Rejection of Voter Awareness Initiative
In Jaipur, shortly after the Supreme Court's Chief Justice-led bench instructed the Rajasthan State Election Commission (SEC) to reconsider applications from social activists, the commission has once again rejected a plea to conduct a voter awareness campaign during the Panchayati Raj elections. In a new order issued on November 4, the SEC cited practical and legal challenges, asserting that granting permission would neither be fair nor lawful. The commission further argued that it is already running a robust and organized voter awareness initiative.
Previously, on November 2, the bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana annulled the commission's earlier denial and directed it to reassess the applicants' request within two days. Following this order, 'Rajasthan Election Watch' and the 'Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan' (MKSS) submitted a new application to the commission. In its ruling, the SEC stated that the applicants failed to provide a clear program, route map, timeline, and details of local organizers, making it difficult for police and administration to make arrangements. Additionally, the ongoing Panchayat elections and upcoming festivals have already stretched police resources thin.
Social activists and civil organizations have expressed strong opposition to the SEC's stance. Prominent activists like Aruna Roy, Nikhil Dey, and Shankar Singh issued a statement highlighting that despite the Supreme Court's clear position, administrative excuses are infringing upon citizens' democratic rights. They emphasized that government initiatives cannot replace citizens' independent participation, as both play complementary roles in a democracy. Civil organizations have now decided to approach the Supreme Court again, demanding a transparent process.
