Raja Muthupandi's Appeal for Infrastructure Development

Raja Muthupandi, who earned a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, has urged the Tamil Nadu government to set up weightlifting training facilities in every district. He believes that enhanced infrastructure will play a crucial role in discovering and developing future weightlifting talent in the state.

Expressing Gratitude for Support

Upon returning to India, Raja dedicated his silver medal to his parents and the people of Tamil Nadu. He acknowledged the fierce competition from the Malaysian lifter who secured gold in his category. The Union Sports Minister hosted a dinner for Indian medalists in New Delhi, announcing a cash prize of ₹20 lakh for Raja's achievement. Additionally, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay declared a cash reward of ₹30 lakh the day after Raja's victory. Raja reiterated his request for the establishment of weightlifting centers to cultivate young athletes and enhance the sport's presence in Tamil Nadu.

Performance Highlights

Raja achieved a total lift of 286kg, which included 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, securing second place in the men's 65kg category. Malaysia's Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamed won gold with a Commonwealth Games record of 299kg, marking his third consecutive title after victories in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.

A Remarkable Comeback Story

This silver medal signifies a remarkable comeback for the 26-year-old athlete, whose career faced a significant setback due to a severe elbow ligament injury in 2019. His recovery was further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and he missed the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games due to the absence of his weight category and tough domestic competition.

Return to Competitive Form

Raja made his return to the national team with the introduction of the 65kg category, gradually regaining his competitive edge. His journey included a ninth-place finish at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships, where he achieved a personal best of 299kg, paving the way for his success at the Commonwealth Games.

India's Weightlifting Success at Glasgow 2026

Raja's medal contributed to a successful outing for Indian weightlifting at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu clinched her third consecutive gold in the women's 48kg category, while Chanambam Rishikanta Singh also earned silver in the men's 60kg event. India concluded the 2026 Commonwealth Games in fourth place overall, amassing a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze, with weightlifting accounting for eight of these medals.
