Guwahati, Nov 4: The Railway Claims Tribunal's Guwahati bench has initiated suo motu proceedings regarding the enigmatic death of Himashree Boro, who was traveling by train from Andhra Pradesh to Assam. This marks the first instance of the bench taking such action in a case of this nature.

Himashree Boro, a 20-year-old student from Assam, had traveled to Andhra Pradesh for a dance event and was on her way back home on October 6. During the night, she reached out to her family, expressing discomfort in the crowded train compartment, which included some boys. Later that evening, her phone was turned off, and her body was discovered the next day near the railway tracks between Dusi and Ponduru stations.

In a conversation with a news outlet, Tribunal members SD Sharma (Judicial) and Leena Sarma (Technical) stated that upon learning about the tragic and puzzling circumstances surrounding the young girl's death, they opted to take suo motu cognizance. Initial investigations indicated that she was a legitimate railway passenger and her death remains unexplained.

The Tribunal disclosed that in such cases, they can grant compensation up to Rs 8 lakh to the victim's family. Today, they recorded statements from the victim's parents.

Additionally, the Tribunal has requested reports from the General Managers of South Coastal Railway and NF Railway, as well as the police heads of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and the Government Railway police regarding the incident.

The Tribunal members emphasized their decision to pursue the case independently due to the tragic nature of the event.

It is important to note that the Railway Claims Tribunal operates under the Ministry of Law and Justice, handling claims related to accidents, loss of goods, freight refunds, and other commercial disputes.
