Railway Protection Force Enhances Security Measures in Northeast India

Guwahati, May 12: In a bid to bolster passenger safety and create a secure atmosphere, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has recorded 3,081 incidents under various provisions of the Railways Act, leading to the prosecution of over 3,000 individuals involved in illegal activities on railway property throughout April.
During this period, the RPF also supported ticket verification efforts, identifying 1,074 individuals traveling without tickets and collecting fines exceeding ₹10 lakh.
In terms of drug enforcement, the RPF uncovered 33 cases of narcotics trafficking, including ganja, brown sugar, and cough syrup, with a total estimated value surpassing ₹2.35 crore.
Moreover, 15 individuals were apprehended for their involvement in the smuggling of illicit liquor.
In operations against touting, four individuals were arrested, resulting in the confiscation of 47 railway tickets valued at over ₹1.43 lakh.
Additionally, 32 suspects linked to the theft of railway assets were detained, leading to the recovery of stolen materials worth more than ₹2.10 lakh.
The RPF also caught 28 individuals for stealing passenger belongings, recovering stolen items, including 44 mobile phones valued at over ₹6.19 lakh in April.
Furthermore, three individuals were arrested for throwing stones at moving trains, and 16 illegal immigrants were apprehended during the month.
In a notable effort, 113 pieces of left-behind luggage, valued at approximately ₹1.40 crore, were retrieved and returned to their rightful owners after thorough verification.
On average, RPF personnel escorted 53 trains daily to maintain passenger safety throughout the region.
“In addition to enforcement, the RPF demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian efforts by rescuing 80 minors and four women, who were subsequently handed over to Childline, NGOs, parents, and law enforcement,” stated a railway official.
The official added, “The RPF of NFR has also been actively involved in cleanliness campaigns and public assistance, resulting in the prosecution of 1,596 individuals for littering on railway premises. Anti-encroachment initiatives were conducted at various locations to ensure the smooth operation of railway services.”
