Raijor Dal Names Candidate for Margherita Ahead of 2026 Assam Elections

Raijor Dal's Early Campaign Kickoff
Margherita, July 14: As the 2026 Assam Assembly elections approach in about nine months, Raijor Dal has initiated its campaign in Upper Assam by revealing its candidate for the Margherita constituency.
During a joining event at Rang Manch in Margherita on Sunday, party leader Akhil Gogoi announced that student leader Rahul Chhetry will represent Raijor Dal in the No. 89 Margherita seat.
Chhetry, who previously served as the general secretary of the party's student organization, Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, will run on the party's ticket.
Presenting Chhetry as a "well-educated youth," Gogoi expressed to the audience, “If the people of Margherita support him, we will make waves in the Assam Assembly. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is always cautious of me—just imagine the impact if he collaborates with me.”
Gogoi also outlined several commitments the party plans to pursue if elected in 2026, such as tackling inflation, establishing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and forgiving farm loans.
He criticized the BJP-led government at the Centre for its inability to control rising prices, stating, “It has been 14 years since they vowed to lower prices. Have you noticed any decrease? Even basic items like salt and oil have become too expensive.”
Notably, some of Gogoi's proposals mirrored promises frequently made by Chief Minister Sarma.
“We will set up MSMEs throughout Assam. This initiative will help reduce the number of Assamese youth who leave the state to work as security personnel,” he added.
With the announcement regarding Margherita, Raijor Dal seems to have taken a significant step in the lead-up to the 2026 Assembly elections, establishing a competitive atmosphere in Upper Assam.
