Sultanpur, Oct 26: Reports indicate that multiple individuals sustained injuries following a collision involving vehicles from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district on Monday.

At the time of the incident, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha was en route to a hearing related to a defamation lawsuit against him.

According to a police official, Gandhi was unharmed, characterizing the event as minor and confirming that no serious injuries were reported.

The collision took place around 10:15 AM near the 91-km marker in the Haliyapur region.

Five vehicles from the convoy, along with an ambulance, were involved in the mishap, which resulted in injuries to party workers, officials, and security personnel.

A police officer stated that a private vehicle at the front of the convoy, belonging to local Congress leaders, abruptly braked for an unknown reason, leading to subsequent collisions among the vehicles behind it.

Following the incident, the convoy, which had police escort for security, continued its journey towards Sultanpur shortly thereafter.

Gandhi was expected to appear before a special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur regarding a defamation case linked to alleged inappropriate comments made about Amit Shah, who was the BJP president at that time and is currently the Union Home Minister.

This case originated on August 4, 2018, when BJP leader Vijay Mishra, a former chairman of the Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank, lodged a complaint against Gandhi concerning the alleged remarks.

Details regarding the number of injured individuals and the severity of their injuries have not yet been disclosed.
