Rahul Gandhi Secures Bail Over Defamatory Remarks About Indian Army

Court Grants Bail to Rahul Gandhi
On Tuesday, a court in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, granted bail to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi concerning allegations of defamatory comments he made about the Indian Army during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022.
Gandhi appeared before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma after the Allahabad High Court had previously dismissed his plea against the summons issued in this matter.
The controversy stems from remarks made by Gandhi on December 16, 2022, regarding a confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang region.
This clash, which occurred on December 9, 2022, resulted in injuries to personnel from both sides.
Verma granted bail on the condition that Gandhi provide a personal bond of Rs 20,000, along with two sureties of the same amount.
The next hearing for this case is scheduled for August 13.
Gandhi's comments, made during the Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra—a campaign from Kanyakumari to Kashmir aimed at opposing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's divisive policies—sparked the defamation complaint.
A former director of the Border Roads Organisation, Uday Shankar Srivastava, initiated the defamation suit, asserting that Gandhi's statements were derogatory and harmed the reputation of the Indian Army.
