Rahul Gandhi Critiques PM Modi's Recent Appeals Amid Economic Strain
Political Attack on Government's Recent Appeals
On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a significant political critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his recent 'seven appeals' to the public. Gandhi dismissed these appeals as not being 'advice' from the Prime Minister but rather as 'evidence of the government's failures.' This statement comes in light of Modi's call for citizens to make seven specific sacrifices amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia and rising crude oil prices.
Gandhi's Strong Remarks
In a post on social media, Gandhi remarked, "Yesterday, Modi ji urged the public to make sacrifices—avoid buying gold, refrain from international travel, reduce petrol usage, limit the consumption of fertilizers and cooking oils, use the metro, and work from home." He emphasized that these are not mere suggestions but indicators of failure. The Congress leader labeled Modi as a 'compromising PM' and accused the government of forcing the public to sacrifice due to its inadequacies.
The Context of Modi's Appeals
During a rally organized by the Telangana BJP in Hyderabad, Modi suggested measures to conserve foreign currency amidst the crisis in West Asia. He recommended reducing petrol and diesel consumption, utilizing metro rail services in cities, carpooling, increasing the use of electric vehicles, opting for railway services for parcel deliveries, and prioritizing remote work.
Economic Pressures and Modi's Recommendations
Highlighting the need to save foreign currency, Modi called for a halt on gold purchases and international travel for a year. He stated, "We must conserve foreign currency at all costs," while noting that the ongoing conflicts in West Asia have significantly raised petrol and food prices. He also mentioned that during the COVID-19 pandemic, people adapted to working from home and virtual meetings, suggesting that these practices should be revisited.
The Root of the Controversy: West Asia Crisis
These appeals from the Prime Minister come at a time when crude oil prices have surged to $126 per barrel due to ongoing conflicts and fears of blockades in the Strait of Hormuz. India relies heavily on imports for its oil needs, placing a significant burden on its foreign currency reserves. The opposition argues that the government is using the international crisis as a cover for its economic policy failures, while the government defends these measures as necessary for national interest.
