Opposition Leader's Concerns Over Environmental Impact

On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, criticized the ambitious ₹81,000 crore infrastructure project underway in Great Nicobar, labeling it as "one of the largest scams and most heinous crimes against the country's natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime." Currently visiting the island, the Congress leader expressed that this initiative by the central government represents nothing more than "destruction under the guise of development." He took to social media to share his observations, stating that what the government refers to as a 'project' is, in reality, a plan to clear millions of trees. He highlighted that a rainforest spanning 160 square kilometers is on the brink of destruction, disregarding the communities whose homes are being taken away.

Historical Significance of the Forests

During his tour of the forests in Great Nicobar, Rahul Gandhi remarked that the trees there are older than memory itself. He emphasized that these forests have been nurtured for generations, and the "beautiful" people living on the island are being deprived of their rights. He reiterated that the so-called 'project' is not a project at all, as millions of trees are marked for cutting, and the rainforest is facing imminent destruction. Many communities have been overlooked, and their homes have been taken from them. The controversy stems from the approval granted to this massive infrastructure project by the National Green Tribunal, which Congress has previously criticized as being based on incomplete and flawed planning.

Previous Criticism from Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi has also criticized the plan to establish a freight and logistics hub at the southern tip of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, urging the central government to reconsider it, citing the region's rich biodiversity and indigenous communities.
