Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Transgender Bill as Attack on Rights

In a strong statement, Rahul Gandhi condemned the transgender amendment bill, asserting it undermines the constitutional rights of transgender individuals. He met with community members who expressed their concerns and highlighted the bill's regressive nature. Gandhi emphasized that the Congress party will oppose this legislation, which he claims violates Supreme Court rulings and fails to protect the diverse identities within the transgender community. The bill, introduced by the Social Justice Minister, aims to establish a framework for the identification and protection of transgender individuals, but Gandhi argues it stigmatizes rather than safeguards their rights.

Opposition Leader's Strong Stance on Transgender Rights

In a recent statement in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition, expressed strong opposition to the transgender bill, labeling it as a direct assault on the constitutional rights and identity of transgender individuals. He emphasized that the Congress party will vigorously contest this legislation.

On Tuesday, several members of the transgender community met with Rahul Gandhi to share their concerns regarding the bill. Following this meeting, he took to social media platform 'X' to voice his disapproval, stating, "The BJP government's transgender amendment bill is an outright attack on the constitutional rights and identity of transgender individuals."

Gandhi argued that this regressive bill violates the Supreme Court's ruling, undermines the ability of transgender individuals to self-identify, erases the diverse cultural identities of communities across India, and forces transgender people to undergo inhumane examinations by medical boards, while also introducing provisions for criminal penalties and surveillance without adequate safety measures. He accused the BJP government of failing to consult the community and presenting a bill that stigmatizes rather than protects them.

He further asserted, "The Constitution safeguards the rights to life, liberty, identity, and dignity for every Indian. The BJP government is violating our Constitution and undermining India's rich history of respecting transgender communities due to its narrow-minded views."

Rahul Gandhi reiterated that the Congress party stands firmly against this bill. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill was introduced in Parliament by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar on March 13, which states that establishing a correct and assured identity for transgender individuals and ensuring their protection is essential for them to benefit from existing laws.
