Opposition Leader's Allegations

On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, accused the government of attempting to reduce Tamil Nadu's representation in Parliament through recent parliamentary actions related to delimitation. As he ramped up his campaign in the state ahead of upcoming elections, he described this move as part of a broader political strategy aimed at impacting southern states. Speaking at a public gathering in Pooneri, Tiruvallur district, he claimed that the RSS and BJP are targeting the identity of the state.

Personal Connection to Tamil Nadu

Gandhi expressed a deep connection with the people of Tamil Nadu, stating, 'Naturally, over the years, I have developed a bond with the people of Tamil Nadu. Although I was not born here and my family is not from Tamil Nadu, I consider myself a part of this state.' He criticized the RSS and BJP for their attempts to undermine Tamil language and culture, questioning their audacity to attack Tamil Nadu's identity.

Concerns Over Legislative Intent

Regarding recent events in Parliament, Gandhi suggested that there is a hidden agenda behind the new bill introduced, which he referred to as a women's bill, already passed in 2023. He argued that the true intent was delimitation, aimed at reducing Tamil Nadu's representation in the Indian Parliament and weakening southern and smaller states. 'We defeated that bill in Parliament yesterday,' he stated.

Advocating for State Rights

Clarifying his political stance, he emphasized that India is a 'union of states' where each state deserves equal representation. He asserted that every state should have a voice and the freedom to speak its language and preserve its traditions. Criticizing the BJP's governance style, he remarked that when the Prime Minister speaks of one nation, one leader, one language, and one people, it constitutes an attack on the Indian Constitution.

Defending Tamil Nadu's Autonomy

As he promoted the India Block ahead of elections, Gandhi insisted that the coalition would resist any attempts at centralized control. He accused the BJP and RSS of wanting to dominate Tamil Nadu from Delhi, asserting, 'We will never allow that. Tamil Nadu must determine its own future, and we will stand with the people to protect their language, culture, and rights.'
