Rahul Gandhi Criticizes India's Justice System Amid Unnao Rape Survivor's Plight
Congress Leader's Strong Statement
New Delhi: On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed grave concerns regarding the treatment of the Unnao rape survivor, stating that India is not only becoming a stagnant economy but also a stagnant society.
Gandhi emphasized that the survivor, who was protesting in Delhi against the bail granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar by the high court, deserves respect and justice rather than fear and injustice.
He questioned, "Is it appropriate to treat a gang rape survivor in such a manner? Is it her 'fault' for having the courage to demand justice?"
The opposition leader expressed disappointment over the bail granted to Sengar, a former BJP MLA, highlighting the ongoing harassment faced by the survivor, who continues to live in fear.
He remarked, "Bail for rapists and treating survivors like criminals—what kind of justice is this? We are not just becoming a dead economy; with such inhumane incidents, we are also evolving into a dead society."
Gandhi asserted that in a democracy, dissent is a fundamental right, and suppressing it is a crime.
The survivor, who was a minor when she was kidnapped and raped by Sengar in 2017, described the high court's decision to suspend Sengar's jail term as a 'death' sentence for her family and announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.
Alongside her mother, she protested near Mandi House against the court's decision to grant bail to Sengar.
The high court's ruling stipulated that Sengar must maintain a distance of five kilometers from the survivor's home and must not threaten her or her mother, with any violation leading to automatic bail cancellation.
Despite the bail, Sengar remains incarcerated as he is serving a 10-year sentence related to the custodial death of the survivor's father.
