Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Government's Attack on State Rights and MGNREGA
Congress Leader's Strong Critique
Following a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP, launched a fierce critique against the government. He accused it of undermining the rights of states and attempting to dismantle the MGNREGA program. Gandhi argued that these recent actions by the government represent a direct assault on state autonomy, infrastructure development, and the rights of marginalized communities.
Impact on State Autonomy and Infrastructure
Gandhi emphasized that this is an attack on the states of India, as the government is stripping them of their financial resources and decision-making authority. He pointed out that MGNREGA has been instrumental in infrastructure development, asserting that it is not merely a work scheme but a conceptual framework for development that has garnered international recognition. He noted that during his visits to 16 countries, he received praise for introducing a new concept based on development rights. However, he lamented that the Prime Minister unilaterally decided to dismantle it without consulting his cabinet or studying the implications.
Consequences for the Poor and Marginalized
He clearly stated that this is a detrimental move against the states, as it robs them of their funds and decision-making power. The impact on infrastructure development in these states is significant, as MGNREGA has facilitated such projects. He described this as a devastating attack on the poor in the country, executed solely by the Prime Minister, reminiscent of the demonetization period. The most vulnerable groups, including tribals, Dalits, OBCs, the economically disadvantaged, and minorities, will suffer greatly, while individuals like Mr. Adani stand to gain immensely. The intent, he claimed, is to transfer wealth from the poor to affluent individuals like Adani.
Congress's Plan to Mobilize Against MGNREGA Changes
In response to the government's actions, Rahul Gandhi announced the Congress party's initiative to launch a 'Save MGNREGA Movement' starting January 5, 2026. He stated that, as mentioned by Kharge, they will oppose these changes and fight against them. He expressed confidence that the entire opposition would unite against this move. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge confirmed that during the meeting, they pledged to initiate a nationwide movement centered around the MGNREGA scheme. The Indian National Congress will take a leading role in this campaign, emphasizing the need to protect the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) at all costs. He reiterated that MGNREGA is not just a scheme but a right to work enshrined in the Indian Constitution, and they are committed to democratically opposing any attempts to remove Gandhi's name from the MGNREGA.
