Rahul Gandhi Criticizes BJP Over Communal Tensions in Uttam Nagar
Accusations of Riot-Like Conditions
On Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of fostering riot-like conditions in Delhi, specifically pointing to the communal unrest in the Uttam Nagar locality.
In a social media post, Gandhi highlighted the heavy toll the violence has taken on the community, stating, “On one side, a young man, Tarun, lost his life, and on the other, an entire family is facing persecution.”
Tarun Bhutolia, a young man, tragically died after sustaining severe injuries during a clash that erupted on March 4 amid Holi festivities. The conflict was ignited when a water balloon, accidentally thrown by an 11-year-old girl from a third-floor balcony, struck a Muslim woman below.
This incident escalated into a dispute between two neighboring families from different religious backgrounds.
The death of the 26-year-old has heightened tensions in the area, leading to damage to several vehicles and some being set ablaze during protests. In response, police and paramilitary forces were deployed to restore order.
Muslim residents have voiced their fears regarding threats of violence during the upcoming Eid celebrations on Saturday.
Gandhi reiterated on Thursday that the residents of Uttam Nagar are against further bloodshed, asserting, “Only the BJP and its ecosystem want bloodshed,” and accused the party of exploiting the situation for political gain.
He claimed that the BJP aims to keep the nation embroiled in Hindu-Muslim conflicts to distract the public from questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisions regarding national security and sovereignty.
“That’s why, in broad daylight, riot-like conditions are once again being created in the nation’s capital,” he added.
Gandhi urged Delhi residents to remain vigilant and not succumb to provocations.
On Wednesday, Congress MP Mohammad Jawaid reported that he had contacted the Union Home Minister, alleging that Muslims in Uttam Nagar are facing open threats and hateful rhetoric ahead of Eid.
The MP from Kishanganj, Bihar, also expressed concerns about perceived selective police actions that he believes embolden those attempting to disrupt communal harmony.
Jawaid emphasized that the ongoing situation is not merely a law-and-order issue but reflects a troubling pattern of targeted hostility, raising serious concerns about the state's commitment to protecting all citizens equally.
A public interest litigation has been submitted to the Delhi High Court, seeking urgent measures to prevent communal violence and address alleged hate speech incidents in Uttam Nagar as Eid approaches.
