Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Bail Granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao Rape Case
Opposition Leader's Strong Condemnation
Following the bail granted to former legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and a prominent Congress figure, expressed his disapproval. He labeled the decision as disheartening and shameful, raising concerns about the ongoing mistreatment of the victim. Gandhi asserted that India is not only becoming an economically stagnant nation but is also evolving into a society devoid of humanity due to such incidents.
Concerns Raised on Social Media
In a post on X, Gandhi questioned, "Is it acceptable to treat a gang rape victim in this manner? Is it her 'fault' for having the courage to speak out for justice? The granting of bail to her assailant (the former BJP legislator) is extremely disappointing and shameful, especially when the victim continues to face harassment and lives in fear." He warned, "What kind of justice is it when rapists receive bail and victims are treated like criminals?" He emphasized that such actions undermine public trust in the justice system.
A Call for Justice and Respect
The senior Congress leader further remarked that such occurrences reflect not only institutional failure but also a profound moral decline. In his post, he stated that we are not only becoming a dead economy but also transforming into a dead society due to these inhumane events. He asserted that raising dissenting voices in a democracy is a right, and suppressing it is a crime. The victim deserves respect, safety, and justice, rather than helplessness, fear, and injustice.
Victim's Mother's Alarming Allegations
The victim's mother alleged that while they were being transported in a CRPF vehicle, they were abruptly dropped off by the roadside, and security personnel took her daughters away. She further claimed, "We have not received justice... they are taking my daughter hostage... these security personnel want to harm us. They took my daughters in the CRPF vehicle... Kuldeep Sengar's bail should be revoked; otherwise, we will sacrifice our lives... we are not safe."
Court's Decision on Sengar's Bail
Just a day prior, the Delhi High Court granted bail (suspension of sentence) to Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. He had been convicted by a CBI court in Delhi for raping a minor and was serving a life sentence. The bench, comprising Justices Subramaniam Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, suspended his sentence pending the appeal.
