Rahul Gandhi Condemns Use of AK-47 Against Student Protesters in Bihar
Allegations of Police Brutality in Bihar
In Bihar, Rahul Gandhi has accused the BJP government of committing "brutality" against protesting students, claiming that AK-47 rifles were used against them. He also pointed out that pellet guns were deployed against demonstrators in Delhi. Gandhi has called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologize to the students and urged the government to take action against those responsible for these violent measures instead of targeting the protesters.
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing a police officer firing an AK-47 at student protesters during the 'Bihar Bandh' on July 25, leading to the officer's suspension.
Gandhi's Demands for Accountability
Rahul Gandhi reiterated his demand for an apology from Prime Minister Modi, insisting that the government must address the grievances of the nation's youth. He emphasized that law enforcement should focus on holding accountable those officials responsible for the violent actions rather than targeting innocent protesters.
Immediate Suspension and Investigation
The incident gained traction on social media when a video showed a police constable allegedly firing at student protesters with an AK-47 during the 'Bihar Bandh' in Siwan district. In response to the video's circulation, the Bihar police headquarters swiftly suspended the officer involved.
Authorities have stated that maintaining law and order is a priority for the police force, but they will not tolerate violations of established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). A thorough departmental investigation has been initiated.
Injured Students Receiving Treatment
Violent clashes erupted between students marching towards Gandhi Maidan in Patna and police during the statewide shutdown. Three injured protesters are currently being treated at Jay Prabha Medanta Hospital in Patna, where their conditions are reported to be stable. Among the injured is 15-year-old Mohammad Arif, who was reportedly shot in the neck while trying to return home amidst the chaos. Doctors successfully removed the bullet during surgery.
