Opposition Demands Accountability in Parliament

New Delhi, July 21: On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, met with Speaker Om Birla and fellow Opposition MPs to demand a thorough discussion in Parliament regarding the NEET-UG paper leak and the violent protests at Jantar Mantar.

Gandhi expressed on X, "Today, I met with the Hon'ble Lok Sabha Speaker alongside Opposition MPs. Our request is straightforward: Parliament must engage in a detailed discussion about the violence inflicted on students yesterday and the government's utter lack of accountability regarding the examination crisis."

He highlighted the violent confrontations that occurred on Monday between supporters of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and security personnel during the 'Sansad Chalo' march, stating, "Students were assaulted for raising valid concerns about their futures. If Parliament cannot deliberate on the future of India's youth, what purpose does it serve?"

Gandhi further asserted, "The Opposition will not allow this issue to be overlooked. We will ensure that the voices of students are heard both on the streets and in Parliament."

In the meantime, the Lok Sabha experienced its second adjournment of the day due to ongoing protests and slogan-shouting by Opposition members, which disrupted the Monsoon Session's proceedings.

Chairing the session, Sandhya Ray announced the adjournment after multiple requests for order were ignored.

Despite several appeals from the Chair, Opposition members persisted in their protests, leading to another adjournment of the House.

This marked the second time the Lok Sabha was adjourned on Tuesday. Earlier, Speaker Om Birla had suspended the session until noon due to continuous disruptions.

Birla urged members to allow the House to function, stating, "Do you not want the House to operate?... Everyone will have the opportunity to voice their concerns."

However, the Opposition continued their protests, resulting in further disruptions and the eventual second adjournment.

Prior to the parliamentary session, leaders of the INDIA bloc convened to strategize for the day's discussions.

Notable attendees included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, and other Opposition leaders.

The disruptions mirrored the chaotic scenes from the opening day of the Monsoon Session on Monday, where repeated adjournments hindered proceedings in both Houses of Parliament.

Opposition parties had protested, calling for discussions on various issues, including the examination paper leaks and the CJP-led protests at Jantar Mantar, which led to ongoing interruptions in parliamentary activities.
