Allegations of Voter Manipulation

On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised serious allegations regarding the integrity of the upcoming 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, claiming that approximately 2.5 million fraudulent voters have been added to the state's electoral rolls.

During a press briefing in New Delhi, Gandhi presented a photo of a woman he identified as a Brazilian model, asserting that her image was improperly used across multiple constituencies. He stated, β€œThis woman has cast her vote 22 times at 10 different booths. What is a Brazilian doing on Haryana's voter list?”

Gandhi suggested that this situation is part of a broader scheme aimed at converting a potential Congress victory into a defeat.

He further claimed that one voter's name and image appeared 223 times across two polling stations, alleging that there are numerous similar instances throughout Haryana.

Gandhi accused the Election Commission of colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by failing to address the issue of duplicate voters.

β€œThe Election Commission could eliminate duplicates in seconds,” he asserted. β€œThey just need to run a simple query to identify matching photos, names, or addresses. This is not happening. Why? Because they are aiding the BJP.”

Additionally, he alleged that several BJP members are registered as voters in multiple states.

β€œThousands of BJP leaders are casting votes in both Uttar Pradesh and Haryana,” he claimed. β€œThere are individuals who are BJP leaders in one state and registered voters in another.”

Gandhi also accused the Election Commission of attempting to conceal evidence by destroying CCTV footage.

He showcased a video featuring B Gopalakrishnan, vice president of the BJP's Kerala unit, who stated that the party would relocate individuals from other states to constituencies it aims to win.

In August, Gopalakrishnan remarked, β€œIn constituencies where we plan to win, we will bring people even from Jammu and Kashmir. We will settle them for a year to ensure they participate in the voting process. There is no doubt about it. We will do it again in the future.”

Gandhi's comments come just a day before the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections, with the second phase set for November 11 and counting on November 14.

On September 1, he indicated that his party would unveil significant evidence regarding vote manipulation.

On September 18, he alleged that a centralized software program was being utilized to systematically remove names from voter lists in Karnataka, claiming that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was protecting those involved in β€œvote theft.”

He asserted that the deletion process specifically targeted polling booths where the Congress had a strong presence.

The Opposition leader stated that Congress's analysis of the Aland Assembly constituency in Karnataka revealed that an unidentified entity had used software to delete voters systematically.

He alleged that these voter IDs were removed using fake login credentials and phone numbers from outside Karnataka.

While the exact number of voters removed from the electoral rolls in Aland remains unclear, he claimed that 6,018 applications had been submitted impersonating other voters.

He emphasized that these individuals had never filed such applications.

In response, the Election Commission labeled Gandhi's allegations as β€œincorrect and baseless.”

The commission clarified that β€œno deletion of any vote can be executed online by any member of the public, as misconceived by [Gandhi].”

In 2023, β€œcertain unsuccessful attempts were made for deletion of electors” in Aland, prompting the Election Commission to file a first information report to investigate the matter.

The Aland constituency was won by a BJP candidate in 2018 and a Congress nominee in 2023, the poll panel noted.

Concerns Over Mahadevapura

On August 7, Gandhi stated that his party had spent six months scrutinizing the electoral rolls in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency and identified discrepancies in over 100,000 names.

He claimed that the electoral rolls contained 11,965 duplicate entries, 40,009 voters with fake or invalid addresses, 10,454 β€œbulk voters” registered at a single address, 4,132 voters with invalid photographs, and 33,692 cases of alleged misuse of Form 6.

Form 6 is the application document for registering new voters.

He alleged that this evidence indicates collusion between the Election Commission and the BJP.

The Election Commission dismissed Gandhi's claims as β€œfalse and misleading.”

Claims of Election Rigging

Gandhi and the Congress party have consistently alleged that there was β€œindustrial-scale rigging involving the capture of our national institutions” during the Maharashtra elections held in November.

The BJP-led alliance defeated the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, which includes the Congress, in those elections.

However, the Election Commission has rejected these allegations. On August 14, it described Gandhi's claims regarding Mahadevapura as β€œfalse and misleading.” Earlier, in February, it labeled attempts to discredit the Commission by parties dissatisfied with election outcomes as β€œcompletely absurd.”
