Rahmanullah Gurbaz Shines Despite Afghanistan's ODI Loss to India
Gurbaz Achieves Milestone
In a remarkable performance, Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz surpassed Ibrahim Zadran to become the fourth-highest run-scorer for his nation in international cricket. He also made history as the first Afghan player to notch up 10 international centuries. Although Afghanistan faced defeat in the first ODI against India in Dharamsala, Gurbaz's explosive innings of 102 runs off just 51 balls, featuring eight fours and six sixes, stood out, especially after his team found themselves struggling at 26 for 3. His century, achieved in just 48 balls, is now the fastest for Afghanistan in ODI history.
Gurbaz's Impressive Stats
Currently, Gurbaz has played 143 international matches, accumulating 4,403 runs in 146 innings with an average of 30.36 and a strike rate of 106.55. His record includes 10 centuries and 20 fifties, with a personal best of 151 runs. In comparison, Ibrahim Zadran has scored 4,337 runs in 113 matches, with seven centuries and 29 fifties. The leading run-scorer for Afghanistan remains veteran all-rounder Mohammed Nabi, who has 6,252 runs from 332 matches, averaging 24.71 with two centuries and 25 fifties. Gurbaz has also become the second Afghan player to hit over 200 sixes in international cricket, now totaling 204.
India Wins in Rain-Shortened Match
The match was curtailed to 25 overs per side due to rain. India chose to bowl first, quickly reducing Afghanistan to 26 for 3. Gurbaz's aggressive batting, particularly against spin, led to a significant 116-run partnership with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, who contributed 27 runs off 30 balls. Afghanistan was eventually bowled out for 194 runs in 24.5 overs. Debutants Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey impressed with figures of 3 for 27 and 3 for 47, respectively, while Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy each took two wickets.
India's Chase and Player of the Match
During India's chase, they lost Rohit Sharma early for 16 runs, just as he was building a partnership with Shubman Gill. Gill remained unbeaten at 84 runs off 66 balls, hitting 11 fours and two sixes. He formed crucial partnerships, including 70 runs for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who scored 34 runs off 22 balls, and 55 runs for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul, who finished with 39 runs off 19 balls. India successfully chased down the target in 22.5 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with Gill earning the 'Player of the Match' accolade.
