Racial Abuse Incident in Delhi: Arunachal Women Demand Justice
Investigation Launched into Racial Abuse Case
New Delhi: Authorities have invoked specific sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in response to the racial abuse faced by three women from Arunachal Pradesh in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, as reported on Wednesday.
According to police officials, the decision to apply these provisions was made based on the evidence collected. They confirmed that one suspect, Ruby Jain, has been taken into custody.
An officer of ACP rank is now overseeing the investigation, which is being closely monitored by senior officials.
Reports indicate that the three women were allegedly subjected to racial insults and intimidation by their neighbors, Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain, in Malviya Nagar.
The incident reportedly escalated on February 20, following a disagreement over repair work in their rented apartment, during which the neighbors referred to the women using derogatory terms.
The women had hired an electrician to install an air conditioner, which led to dust and debris falling onto the floor below, prompting complaints from the neighbors.
The women claimed that the couple directed abusive language and made derogatory remarks aimed at them and the Northeastern community. A video capturing the incident subsequently circulated widely on social media.
The Delhi Police confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the couple under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including those addressing the outraging of a woman's modesty and inciting enmity based on religion and race.
In response to the incident, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu condemned the racial abuse and called for prompt and decisive action from the Delhi Police Commissioner.
Political leaders, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Congress Lok Sabha member Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, have also expressed their condemnation of the incident, demanding strict measures against the perpetrators.
