Celebrating a Remarkable Achievement

Indian chess grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa expressed his pride in his sister R Vaishali for winning the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Candidates 2026 title, highlighting her inspiring performance during critical moments of the tournament.

Victory in Cyprus

R Vaishali secured the FIDE Women's Candidates title after a decisive victory over Kateryna Lagno in the final round held in Cyprus on Wednesday. This achievement guarantees her a spot in the upcoming Women's World Championship match against reigning champion Ju Wenjun later this year.

Well Wishes from the Community

Praggnanandhaa took to social media platform X to congratulate his sister, stating, "Congrats to Vaishali akka! Proud of what you have achieved! Inspiring to see how you handled the critical moments in the tournament! Happy to see the results for all the hard work!"

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandviya also praised Vaishali, tweeting, "Nari Shakti of Bharat is dominating every field! Heartiest congratulations to R. Vaishali on scripting history as the first Indian to win the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament. Entire Bharat is proud of you."

Vaishali's Stellar Performance

At just 24 years old, R Vaishali clinched the title by a narrow margin of half a point, achieving victory in the final round against Kateryna Lagno. Playing with the white pieces, she demonstrated exceptional skill and composure, finishing at the top of the standings.

Entering the tournament as one of the lowest-rated competitors, Vaishali's impressive journey has drawn parallels to D Gukesh's remarkable victory in the 2024 Candidates tournament, where he also triumphed despite a lower rating.

Her consistent performance throughout the event was crucial, allowing her to surpass a competitive field and secure her place in the Women's World Championship match against Ju Wenjun. This achievement marks a significant improvement from her previous campaign in 2024, where she finished joint-second with 7.5 points. This time, she topped the standings with an improved score, marking one of the most significant milestones in her career.

"Playing for a world championship title is very prestigious - very happy that she's come so far," said her childhood coach, RB Ramesh, during a live stream on Chessbase India, as quoted by ESPN. "She kept her nerves well at the crucial moment. Really great result," he added.

Understanding the Candidates Tournament

The Women's Candidates tournament has a rich history, first established in 1952 to determine the challenger for the Women's World Championship. It served as the qualifying event until 1997 when knockout-style tournaments took over. However, the Candidates format was reinstated in 2019 after FIDE reverted to the traditional match system for determining the Women's World Champion.
