Quad Foreign Ministers Convene in New Delhi Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions
Significant Quad Meeting in New Delhi
On Tuesday, a crucial meeting of the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) foreign ministers took place in New Delhi, amidst China's increasing military assertiveness and global geopolitical upheaval. Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who chaired the meeting, emphasized that the Indo-Pacific region must continue to be a key driver of global development and stability. He strongly urged member nations to foster a 'reliable and transparent' partnership for peace, prosperity, and security in the region. The meeting was attended by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
Addressing Regional Concerns
During the meeting, Jaishankar highlighted the growing global concerns regarding China's military aggression in the Indo-Pacific. He stated, 'Our focus will clearly remain on the Indo-Pacific, which is the specific domain of the Quad.' He pointed out the need to tackle challenges such as supply chain resilience, disruptions in connectivity, excessive centralization of manufacturing and resources, and the lack of critical infrastructure. Each of these issues underscores the necessity for enhanced partnerships.
Strengthening Strategic Trust
Jaishankar also mentioned potential 'concerns' in the Indo-Pacific region without going into detail. He stressed the importance of strengthening strategic trust, ensuring maritime security, promoting economic alternatives, and nurturing a spirit of collaboration. 'As maritime democracies, pluralistic societies, and market economies, we share a responsibility for a free and open Indo-Pacific,' he added, asserting that the region should remain a major conduit for global development and stability.
Commitment to Quad's Effectiveness
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called for making the Quad as robust and effective as possible. She expressed a firm commitment to maintaining the momentum of the Quad and emphasized the desire for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Rubio noted that recent global events have made the Quad even more relevant, stating that it can address some of the world's most pressing issues, including energy security, freedom of navigation, and critical minerals.
