PVR INOX Pictures Brings Christmas Karma to Indian Audiences

Gurinder Chadha's Christmas Karma, a modern retelling of Charles Dickens's classic A Christmas Carol, is set to be distributed in India by PVR INOX Pictures. This fantasy musical comedy features Kunal Nayyar in a role reminiscent of Scrooge, alongside a star-studded cast that includes Eva Longoria, Hugh Bonneville, Billy Porter, and Boy George.

Christmas Karma is just one of the many films that PVR INOX Pictures plans to introduce to Indian viewers. The lineup for 2026 is highlighted by Josh Safdie's Oscar-nominated Marty Supreme, featuring Timothée Chalamet as a table tennis player. Additionally, PVR INOX Pictures will soon release two films starring Sydney Sweeney: the sports biopic Christy and The Housemaid, based on Freida McFadden's novel.

Other anticipated releases include the Malayalam sports comedy Chatha Pacha: The Ring of Rowdies, the Korean film Your Letter, and sequels like Greenland 2: Migration and The Strangers: Chapter 3, among others.

Nayana Bijli, who leads Distribution and Licensing at PVR INOX Limited, believes that Indian audiences are eager for a variety of cinematic experiences. The multiplex chain's collaborations with companies like A24, Lionsgate, and others have resulted in a consistent influx of international titles, Bijli shared in an interview.

What attracted you to Gurinder Chadha’s Christmas Karma?

Bijli explained that the film's appeal stemmed from several factors, including its commercial viability and the reputation of its creators. Christmas Karma checks all the right boxes: it features Kunal Nayyar, has a musical element, and addresses themes of immigration and identity. Given Chadha's strong presence in both the UK and India, Bijli felt it was an exciting opportunity to collaborate on this project.

How do mid-budget films fare in the current box office landscape?

Bijli noted that mid-budget films are indeed finding success. The Indian audience has shown a willingness to embrace diverse narratives. Recently, PVR INOX experienced its highest admissions in two years, with around 44 million attendees, thanks to a mix of major Hindi films and regional and Hollywood productions.

Bijli cited the recent success of Nuremberg, a mid-budget historical courtroom drama that exceeded expectations at the box office. She emphasized that there is an audience for every type of film, and she hopes Christmas Karma will resonate with viewers.

Is the theatrical business in decline?

Bijli expressed that each film has its unique potential, and predicting audience preferences can be challenging. She highlighted the ongoing activity in the theatrical market, with producers investing significantly in new projects, which gives her confidence as a distributor.

She also mentioned the growing popularity of anime films in India, sharing her experience with successful releases like Suzume, which garnered a passionate following.

What drives audience attendance?

Bijli noted that various factors influence audience behavior, including the timing of a film's release. With Christmas Karma, Dhurandhar, and Avatar all debuting during the holiday season, she anticipates a positive impact.

She also observed that Gen Z is significantly influencing viewing habits, often driving family and community attendance based on social media trends.

What is your response to the recent open letter from filmmakers regarding independent films?

Bijli acknowledged the letter and emphasized that PVR INOX monitors what works in cinemas. They adapt their programming based on audience demand and the performance of films.

Do re-releases of older films resonate with audiences?

Bijli shared that re-releases can be very successful, citing Rockstar as a prime example. The excitement surrounding re-releases indicates a strong appetite for familiar films, as evidenced by the popularity of both Rockstar and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
