PV Sindhu Shares Experience of Being Stranded in Dubai Amidst Crisis
Sindhu's Ordeal in Dubai
PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, expressed her distress over being stranded in Dubai while en route to the UK for the All England Open. Although she feels disappointed about missing the event, she emphasized that her safety was her top priority.
Sindhu was scheduled to compete in the All England Open in Birmingham, which was set to begin on Tuesday. However, her travel plans were disrupted due to escalating tensions in West Asia following coordinated strikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian military sites. This led to retaliatory actions from Iran and the closure of airspace in several countries, including Iran and Iraq, affecting major international flight routes.
Stressful Experience in Dubai
During a press conference organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sindhu recounted her experience upon arriving in Dubai on February 28. She discovered that all flights had been suspended shortly after her arrival. "I landed at 1 PM, and by 1:15 PM, all flights were grounded. We were left in the dark about the situation and were told to wait for updates," she explained.
Sindhu described the atmosphere at the airport as chaotic, noting that while she was stuck, other players had successfully departed for Birmingham just hours earlier.
Chaos and Uncertainty
Reflecting on the situation, Sindhu mentioned that had she left just a few hours earlier, she would have joined her fellow Indian players in Birmingham. She labeled the entire experience as "unfortunate" and highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the reopening of airspace. Although arrangements were made for stranded passengers to stay in a transit hotel, the process was slow due to the high volume of travelers.
She described the scene as chaotic, stating, "It took time to get hotel vouchers, and we were not allowed to leave the airport due to the crowd. Eventually, we were escorted to the hotel, but my coach informed me of a loud noise that sounded like an explosion, causing panic among those present."
Prioritizing Safety
Sindhu conveyed her fear during the ordeal, saying, "Hearing that loud noise while being so close was terrifying. We were advised to stay indoors and avoid windows due to safety concerns."
Despite her disappointment over missing the tournament, she acknowledged that safety was paramount. "I tried every possible way to reach the All England, but it was beyond my control. Ultimately, safety is what matters most," she stated.
Gratitude for Support
Sindhu expressed her gratitude towards the Indian Consulate in Dubai for their assistance in securing accommodations for stranded Indians. She mentioned receiving calls from various officials, including the sports minister and the Civil Aviation Minister, who checked on her well-being. "The Badminton Association of India also stayed in touch, and I received numerous messages from the media inquiring about my safety," she added.
She praised Emirates Airlines for their efforts in coordinating the return of stranded passengers, stating, "The Indian Consulate General in Dubai played a crucial role in ensuring our safe return. Thankfully, we managed to leave safely, and I am grateful for the support we received."
Communication with BWF
Regarding potential penalties for missing the tournament, Sindhu communicated with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), explaining her situation. "I kept them updated from the start, and they were understanding of my circumstances. They were also aware of other players facing similar issues," she noted.
Looking Forward to Future Competitions
Sindhu expressed her eagerness to participate in the Swiss Open starting March 10, although she noted that flights are currently full. "I am exploring all options to reach Switzerland, but the ongoing conflict complicates matters. I hope for a positive outcome and aim to represent my country in future competitions. I hope this is my first and last experience of this nature," she concluded.
