Sindhu's Return Amid Tensions

New Delhi, March 3: Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has safely arrived back in India after being stranded in Dubai for three days due to halted flight operations linked to rising tensions in West Asia.

Sindhu was en route to Birmingham for the All England Open, set to commence on Tuesday, with a layover in Dubai. However, she found herself stuck at the airport amid significant flight disruptions caused by the escalating conflict in the region.

"I’m back home in Bangalore and feeling safe. The past few days have been quite intense and filled with uncertainty, but I am genuinely thankful to be back in my home. A huge thank you to the amazing ground teams, Dubai authorities, airport personnel, immigration officials, and everyone who provided exceptional care during this challenging time. Their empathy and professionalism were invaluable," Sindhu expressed on X.

Earlier, she recounted her distressing experience from Dubai, describing the last few hours as "extremely tense" with "sounds of interceptions and explosions" occurring close to her location at the airport.

Although Sindhu was unable to compete in the All England Open, where she was set to play against Thailand’s Supanida Katethong in the first round, several of her fellow players managed to reach Birmingham without any travel complications.

In a related development, the West Indies cricket team's departure from India has been postponed following their exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup due to restrictions in international airspace.

The team is currently safe and accommodated in India. Windies Cricket has stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as travel arrangements are confirmed.

"CWI is collaborating with the International Cricket Council (ICC), relevant government bodies, and airline partners to ensure the earliest safe travel arrangements for the squad and support staff. The safety and well-being of our players, coaches, and officials are our top priority," the organization mentioned in a statement.

Additionally, the Zimbabwe cricket team's return to their home country after a successful ICC T20 World Cup has also been delayed due to the ongoing air travel disruptions stemming from the crisis in the Middle East.

Zimbabwe Cricket is awaiting the ICC to finalize contingency measures for alternative travel arrangements.
