PV Sindhu Leads Indian Team at BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi
Overview of the Championships
The BWF World Championships 2026 is set to take place in New Delhi from August 17 to 23, featuring a 10-member Indian team led by two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu.
Sindhu's Qualification and Achievements
Sindhu, who clinched the world badminton title in 2019 and earned silver medals in both 2017 and 2018, secured her place in the women's singles as the host representative, following the Badminton World Federation (BWF) qualification criteria.
Indian Contingent and Player Qualifications
The final roster, determined by world rankings as of April 28, will feature 64 players in both men's and women's singles, along with 48 pairs in each doubles category. India will have two direct entrants in every category.
In men's singles, Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty have qualified, while Sindhu will be accompanied by the promising Unnati Hooda in women's singles.
The men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked fourth overall, leads India's representation, with Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun filling the second men's doubles spot.
In women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, currently ranked 30th, will compete alongside Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi. For mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto qualified in 21st place, while Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde secured the second spot.
Reserve Players and Defending Champions
Several Indian players, including world championship medallists Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy, are listed as reserves. The BWF has confirmed that defending champions in all five events will participate.
Top-ranked entrants include Shi Yu Qi from China (men's singles), Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae from Korea (men's doubles), Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning from China (women's doubles), Akane Yamaguchi from Japan (women's singles), and Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei from Malaysia (mixed doubles).
