Sindhu Takes on New Role

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion, has been appointed as the Chair of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes' Commission for the term spanning 2026 to 2029, according to reports from Olympics.com. In this capacity, she will also join the BWF Council, ensuring that athletes have a direct influence on the organization's global governance.

Sindhu's Expression of Gratitude

Sindhu expressed her heartfelt thanks for the trust placed in her by her fellow athletes and recognized the contributions of Greysia Polii, her predecessor. "It is a privilege to accept this responsibility, and I am filled with humility and gratitude. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Greysia Polii for her remarkable service during her term," Sindhu stated, as reported by Olympics.com.

About Greysia Polii

Greysia Polii, an Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo 2020 and a champion in women's doubles at the Asian Games, retired from competitive badminton in 2022. She had two terms on the BWF Athletes' Commission, with her most recent term running from 2021 to 2025.

"I am eager to collaborate closely with the BWF to advocate for every player and to strive for significant, enduring changes that truly matter," Sindhu, who has been part of the BWF Athletes' Commission since 2017 and has served as an Integrity Ambassador since 2020, shared on her social media.

Sindhu, who secured a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and a bronze at Tokyo 2020, stands as India's most accomplished badminton player. The 30-year-old athlete is poised to lead the Indian team at the upcoming 2026 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Qingdao, China.

New Members of the Commission

Debora Jille from the Netherlands, a silver medalist in women's doubles at the European Games, will take on the role of Deputy Chair. Other notable representatives include An Se-young, the reigning Olympic women's singles champion from South Korea, Doha Hany from Egypt, a six-time African Games medallist, and Jia Yifan from China, who is a gold medalist in women's doubles for Paris 2024.

In the para-badminton sector, Chan Ho Yuen Daniel from Hong Kong, who previously held the interim chair position, will now serve as the full-time chair. Indian para-badminton player Abu Hubaida is also part of the commission.
