PV Sindhu Begins with a Victory

Star badminton player PV Sindhu kicked off her campaign at the 2026 BWF World Championships with a commanding win against Ireland's Sophia Noble. Competing in front of her home fans at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Sindhu triumphed in the women's singles Round of 64, securing the match with scores of 21-7 and 21-11.

From the outset, Sindhu showcased her skills, employing precise drop shots and powerful smashes. Noble found it challenging to match Sindhu's pace and aggressive style. After a dominant first game, Sindhu maintained her lead in the second, thwarting any attempts by Noble to mount a comeback. This victory propels Sindhu into the Round of 32, where she will face Canada's Wen Yu Zhang on Tuesday. Notably, Sindhu has an impressive history at the BWF World Championships, having earned five medals—one gold, two silver, and two bronze—tying with China's Zhang Ning for the most women's singles medals in the tournament's history.

Treesa and Gayatri Achieve Easy Win

In the Women's Doubles Round of 64, the Indian duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand commenced their 2026 BWF World Championships journey with a solid victory over Spain's Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez. Competing at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, the World No. 19 pair clinched a convincing win with scores of 21-9 and 21-13 in just over half an hour.

From the beginning, Treesa and Gayatri displayed dominance. Treesa's powerful smashes combined with Gayatri's agility at the net allowed them to easily secure the first game. Although the Spanish pair attempted to rally in the second game, the Indian team maintained control, leading 11-7 at the break and extending their advantage after the interval to conclude the match. Treesa and Gayatri are set to face the American duo of Lauren Lam and Allison Lee in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.
