Putul Sonowal, an Indian lawn bowls athlete, has expressed optimism about India's chances at the Commonwealth Games 2026 following his victory over world champion Ryan Bester in the men's singles sectional play. He noted that the sport has gained significant recognition in India since the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Victory Against a World Champion
In an interview, Sonowal emphasized the importance of defeating Bester, acknowledging the challenge posed by the Canadian champion. "Winning against a world champion is no small feat, and I gave it my all," he remarked.
He also commended the performance of India's women's lawn bowls team, who advanced to the next round after a win against Malta. "Our women players performed excellently and secured their place in the next round," he stated.
Influence of the 2022 Commonwealth Games
Sonowal reflected on India's achievements at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where the nation secured gold and silver medals in both the women's and men's fours events. He noted, "Before 2022, lawn bowls was relatively unknown in India; few were aware of the sport."
He believes that the success at the Birmingham Games has led to increased visibility for lawn bowls in India, and he is hopeful for another medal-winning performance in the current edition. "The sport has gained considerable attention since the Commonwealth Games, and I am optimistic about our chances for medals this time as well," he added.

Sonowal expressed his desire for the growing interest in lawn bowls to inspire more Indian athletes to pursue the sport and compete in international events. "Lawn bowls in India should progress, and our players should have opportunities to excel in upcoming tournaments," he concluded.
Match Highlights
At 43 years old, Putul Sonowal made his Commonwealth Games debut, winning a tie-breaker against Bester after the two players split the initial sets at the Scottish Event Campus.
Sonowal, who is the reigning Asian champion, won the first set 5-4 but lost the second set 7-3 in his first match of Section D, which consists of six competitors.
The winners of each of the four sections (A to D) will advance to the semi-finals.
