Putin's Optimistic Outlook on Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed that the war in Ukraine may soon come to an end, sparking new hopes for peace negotiations after more than four years of intense conflict. Speaking during Russia's Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on Saturday, Putin stated, "I believe this matter is now nearing its conclusion." Many view this as the strongest indication yet of Russia's readiness to engage in peace talks. His remarks coincided with the initiation of a three-day ceasefire proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Additionally, both nations have agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners, marking one of the largest prisoner swaps since the onset of the war.

Victory Day Parade and Military Display

This year's Victory Day parade in Moscow was notably smaller compared to previous years, with no tanks parading through Red Square. Instead, large screens displayed missiles, drones, and fighter jets, while Russian soldiers, including those involved in the Ukraine conflict, marched through the capital. In his address, Putin praised the Russian troops and accused NATO countries of supporting aggressive actions against Russia. Reports also indicated that North Korean soldiers, who allegedly fought alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region, participated in the parade.

Potential Resumption of Talks with European Leaders

Putin also hinted at a willingness to resume discussions with European leaders. When asked which European leader he would prefer to engage with, he mentioned former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, known for his long-standing ties with Moscow. He was also questioned about the possibility of a direct meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Putin responded that such a meeting would only occur if both sides first agree on a long-term peace plan.

Trump's Call for Extended Ceasefire

Meanwhile, Trump has urged both countries to extend the temporary ceasefire and take steps towards a permanent resolution of the conflict. Speaking to reporters in Washington, he expressed his desire to see the war come to a halt, describing the Russia-Ukraine war as one of the most devastating situations since World War II. So far, there have been no significant reports of ceasefire violations, although both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of attacks in recent days.
