Puri's New Airport: A Vision Realized Thanks to Naveen Patnaik

Puri's Airport Project Gains Momentum
Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has credited former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for securing approval from the central government for a new airport in Puri.
A letter from Patnaik to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, dated January 2021, was shared by the BJD, highlighting his request for a greenfield airport in the coastal town known for its temple.
Subhasish Khuntia, a Rajya Sabha MP from Puri, stated that the airport's blueprint was crafted during Patnaik's tenure as chief minister.
"Patnaik's correspondence with PM Modi in 2021 led to the site clearance for this initiative in 2023. Approximately 1,146 acres have been earmarked for the project, with 251 acres already acquired," he explained.
To enhance Puri's appeal as a premier tourist destination, Patnaik also initiated the development of a heritage corridor and a Blue Flag beach.
"Since becoming an MP, I have consistently advocated for the Puri airport in the Rajya Sabha," Khuntia remarked.
"Naveen Patnaik's vision is now coming to fruition, and I attribute the airport's establishment in Puri to him," he added.
The Jagannath temple, a 12th-century structure, is revered as one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus.
On Monday, the central government granted in-principle approval for the greenfield airport in Puri.
Last year, the government requested a detailed project report (DPR) that includes development plans, cost estimates, funding strategies, traffic forecasts, and construction timelines for the proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri, according to an official.
In September 2023, the central government provided "site clearance" to the Odisha government for the airport's establishment.
