Punnamada Panthers Crowned Champions at Red Bull Vallam Vali

The vibrant tradition of boat racing in Keralam was on full display during a thrilling day-long event held at the picturesque Gothuruth in North Paravur. Organized by Red Bull, the second season of Red Bull Vallam Vali showcased both a boat race and a tug-of-war competition.

The Competition

The event featured two main categories, each utilizing different types of traditional boats:

1. **Chundan Vallam Row Off**: A tug-of-war contest on water involving two 85-man snake boats, each crew rowing in opposite directions.

2. **Iruttukuthy Vallam Row Off**: A race between two teams of 27 rowers on the same boat, competing against each other in opposite directions.

The Boats

* **Chundan Vallam**: A 100-foot (30-meter) snake boat, renowned for its role in Keralam's famous boat races during the Onam festival.

* **Iruttukuthy Vallam**: A competitive sport boat known for its remarkable speed on calm waters.

Scoring and Format

The competition was structured in a round-robin format, with each team participating in three matches before the top two advanced to the finals. Points were awarded as follows:

1. The winning team received 2 points.

2. If no boat crossed the finish line within 120 seconds, the team whose boat was farthest from the center line at the STOP announcement was declared the winner.

3. In case of a tie in points, the team with the lowest aggregate time for their winning matches ranked higher. If ties persisted, the Organizing Committee would determine the tie-break or playoff procedure.

Participating Teams

The event featured several teams, including Ashtamadi Acers, Kuttanad Knights, Vembanad Vikings, and Punnamada Panthers.

A Celebration of Keralam's Heritage

VD Satheesan, the Chief Minister of Keralam, remarked, "Keralam's traditional boat races are a vital part of our cultural and sporting identity, fostering community spirit through teamwork and a shared love for our waterways. The Gothuruth Vallamkali is one of the oldest traditional boat races in the Ernakulam district, Keralam, first held in 1938 and celebrated annually in September on the Periyar River.

The festivities in Gothuruth extended beyond the river, featuring captivating Chenda Melam drum performances and dynamic breakdance displays, merging Keralam's rich cultural heritage with contemporary vibrancy.
