Strengthening Punjab's Rail Network
The Union Minister of Railways and Food Processing, Ravneet Singh Bittu, is overseeing several significant railway initiatives aimed at enhancing Punjab's rail infrastructure, improving connectivity, and promoting regional development by 2025.
New Rail Lines and Network Expansion
The final location survey for the Gurdsapur-Mukerian rail link, a strategic future corridor aimed at boosting both passenger and freight transport in northern Punjab, has been approved.
Additionally, the Rajpura-Mohali rail line, spanning 18 kilometers and costing approximately ₹443 crores, has received approval. This project will significantly enhance connectivity between Mohali and Rajpura, facilitating easier travel to Delhi and providing direct rail access between the Malwa region and Chandigarh.
The Ferozepur-Pattee rail link project, covering 25.72 kilometers and estimated at around ₹764 crores, has also been fully funded by Indian Railways. To expedite land acquisition, ₹138 crores have been deposited with the Deputy Commissioner of Tarn Taran and ₹56 crores with the Deputy Commissioner of Ferozepur. Once completed, this line will connect the Malwa and Majha regions, greatly reducing travel distance between Ferozepur and Amritsar.
After being stalled for several years, the Qadian-Bass rail line project has finally resumed, reviving construction on this historic 40-kilometer route. This initiative is expected to enhance regional industry and improve connectivity.
As part of extensive modernization efforts to facilitate increasing rail traffic in the Tricity area and establish better connections on major routes, the final location survey for the doubling of the Chandigarh-Morinda-Ludhiana railway track has commenced.
Moreover, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the national network, a survey has been initiated for a third railway line between Ambala and Pathankot to enhance connectivity on the main line.
Rail Services Enhancements
Boosting Rail Services
The launch of the Vande Bharat Express connecting Ferozepur to Delhi has significantly improved rail connectivity in the Malwa region. This express train will stop at several key cities in Malwa, with a new stop added in Barnala.
To accommodate pilgrims attending the Shaheed Jor Mela, Indian Railways has announced temporary halts for 12 trains at Sirhind Junction from December 25 to 27, 2025.
