Punjab Kings' Struggles Linked to Overseas Bowlers, Says Piyush Chawla
Chawla Points to Overseas Bowlers as PBKS Struggles Persist
Piyush Chawla, a former Indian cricketer, has identified the underwhelming performance of Punjab Kings' (PBKS) overseas bowlers, particularly Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett, as a significant factor in the team's difficulties during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The team suffered its fifth consecutive defeat, losing to the Mumbai Indians (MI) by six wickets on Thursday. This losing streak follows a promising start where PBKS achieved six consecutive victories. Currently, they sit fourth in the IPL standings with 13 points from 12 matches, needing to win their last two games to secure a playoff spot.
Chawla's Analysis of PBKS Bowling Woes
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Chawla expressed that the pressure is mounting on PBKS, emphasizing the necessity of winning their remaining matches to remain competitive. He highlighted the team's bowling as a major concern, particularly the inconsistent performances of Jansen and Bartlett. In the recent match against MI, Jansen recorded figures of 1/55 in four overs, while Bartlett went wicketless with 0/55 in 3.5 overs. Chawla remarked that Jansen has not been performing at his peak, and Bartlett has struggled after his initial overs, complicating PBKS's ability to manage high-scoring chases.
Boucher Advocates for a Fearless Mindset
Mark Boucher acknowledged the challenging situation PBKS finds itself in after a series of narrow defeats, despite a strong start to the season. He suggested that the team's fixation on playoff qualification might be adding unnecessary pressure. Boucher recommended that PBKS adopt a 'nothing to lose' mentality, encouraging them to play more freely. He stated, 'Punjab Kings have encountered a tough phase after several close losses. Focusing too much on the top four can create additional stress, and shifting away from that mindset could be beneficial. If they approach the remaining matches with a fearless attitude, it might liberate them mentally.'
Match Recap: PBKS vs MI
PBKS Innings
In the match, MI chose to bowl first. A solid 50-run partnership between Priyansh Arya (22 off 17 balls) and Prabhsimran Singh set a positive tone for PBKS. Prabhsimran, despite some struggles, scored 57 off 32 balls, contributing to a 57-run partnership with Cooper Connolly (21). However, PBKS collapsed from 107/1 to 140/7. Contributions from Azmatullah Omarzai (38 off 17 balls), Vishnu Vinod (15*), and Xavier Bartlett (18*) helped PBKS reach a total of 200/8 in 20 overs. Shardul Thakur (4/39) and Deepak Chahar (2/36) were the standout bowlers for MI.
MI's Run-Chase
In response, MI's Ryan Rickelton (48 off 23 balls) and Rohit Sharma (25 off 26 balls) formed a 61-run partnership. However, PBKS lost wickets consistently, and at 149/4 in the 17th over, the match was finely balanced. Tilak Varma (75* off 33 balls) and Will Jacks (25* off 10 balls) then combined for a rapid 56-run partnership, successfully chasing down the target with one ball remaining. Omarzai (2/36 in four overs), Yuzi Chahal (1/32 in four overs), and Arshdeep Singh (0/29 in four overs) bowled well for PBKS, but the overseas bowlers, Jansen (1/55) and Bartlett (0/53), continued to struggle.
Currently, MI is positioned eighth in the points table with four wins and eight losses, totaling eight points. PBKS remains in the top four with six wins, five losses, and one no result, accumulating 13 points. If Chennai Super Kings (CSK) triumph over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday, PBKS could drop out of the top four.
