The Need for a Longer IPL Season

Mohit Burman, co-owner of Punjab Kings, argues that the Indian Premier League (IPL) should extend its season to effectively compete with elite global leagues such as the NFL and NBA. He emphasizes that a longer season is essential for enhancing brand growth, ensuring player availability, and boosting global fan engagement.

Current Standing and Future Aspirations

Burman believes that while the IPL ranks second globally in terms of per-match value, it must aim for a 12 to 16-week operational window to climb higher in brand value. Currently, the IPL generates $16.8 million per match, trailing only the NFL's $36.8 million. However, in terms of overall brand value, the IPL still has room for improvement.

He stated, "We’re already second in the world when it comes to per-match value, just behind the NFL. But overall brand value? That’s a different game." According to Houlihan Lokey, the IPL's worth is estimated at $16 billion, significantly higher than the NFL's Dallas Cowboys at $9 billion and the NBA's New York Knicks at $7 billion.

Enhancing the IPL Experience

Burman highlights that extending the season is not merely about increasing the number of matches. A longer season would facilitate richer storytelling, foster deeper rivalries, and enhance commercial value. He remarked, "That gives us space to tell better stories, build rivalries, and create more value for everyone — fans, sponsors, broadcasters."

However, he cautions that simply having more time is not a panacea. "It’s about what we do in that time, the kind of content we push out, how we engage fans year-round, how we build the league beyond the season," he added.

Focus on Player Availability and Scheduling

While Burman does not see the necessity of hosting the IPL abroad, he stresses the importance of a clear and uninterrupted schedule. "Player availability is crucial. We need a clean window where the best in the world can play without restrictions," he stated. He believes that the IPL's current success should not lead to complacency, emphasizing that continuous improvement in fan experience is vital.

"It’s not just about cricket anymore; it’s sport, entertainment, culture all rolled into one," he noted.

Building an International Brand

Burman, along with other IPL team owners, has invested in international leagues such as the Caribbean Premier League, SA20, and MLC. Punjab Kings also owns a franchise in the CPL, which he views as a strategic move to enhance the IPL's global brand presence. He explained, "A lot of teams are now building a common core, with shared vision, systems, and values — across multiple leagues."

Their objective is to create an international "Kings ecosystem." Whether in the IPL or CPL, Burman aims for each franchise to adhere to a consistent blueprint focused on high performance, strong culture, and fan connection. "We’re not just creating teams — we’re building a brand that travels. And this is just the beginning," he asserted.

The Importance of On-Field Performance

Despite the IPL's financial success, Burman emphasizes that on-field results are equally important. "They go hand in hand. Strong on-field performances drive commercial growth — that’s the reality," he stated. The Punjab Kings, who reached the finals this year for the first time in over a decade, have experienced significant commercial growth, reporting a 25% increase year-on-year.

Burman concluded, "When your on-field and off-field stories align, that’s where the real magic happens."
