Punjab Governor Launches Anti-Drug Walkathon to Promote Wellness

Governor Advocates for Unified Action Against Drug Abuse

On Saturday, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria inaugurated an Anti-Drug and Wellness Walkathon at Sukhna Lake, urging citizens to unite in the battle against drug addiction. He emphasized that a collective effort is essential to realize a drug-free India.

Governor Calls for Collective Action Against Drug Menace

Speaking to the media, Kataria highlighted that achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a drug-free nation requires active public involvement and awareness. He remarked, "The Prime Minister envisions a drug-free India. Having visited Chandigarh, a region rich in history and valor, I understand that combating any form of evil is part of their legacy."

The Governor acknowledged Punjab's significant role in national defense and security, noting the sacrifices made since before independence. He expressed alarm over the influx of illegal drugs into the state, suggesting that such activities often receive support from individuals within the community.

"From the pre-independence era to today, Punjab has made the most sacrifices for the security of our borders. Unfortunately, there has been a substantial increase in contraband from Pakistan, which often occurs with local facilitation for trade purposes," he stated.

"This situation reflects a troubling trend where individuals exploit the drug trade, jeopardizing the future of the younger generation for financial gain," Kataria urged, calling for a reevaluation of involvement in such activities.

Celebrating Athletes and Promoting a Drug-Free Lifestyle

The event also recognized local athletes who have achieved success for Chandigarh and the nation.

Gurseerat Kaur, a silver medalist at the Asian Boxing U15 & U17 Championships 2026, expressed her pride in being honored by the Governor. She thanked her coaches and the Chandigarh administration for their unwavering support, stating, "It feels amazing; I feel very proud of myself. The recognition from the Governor is a testament to our hard work and dedication."

Yashkirat Kaur Hayer, who won gold at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2026, emphasized the importance of consistency in sports and encouraged fellow athletes to avoid drugs and doping. "Being recognized by the Governor is a proud moment for us. I have been fencing for over ten years, and maintaining consistency is key to success," she shared.

"I am preparing for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan from September 19 to October 4, aiming to represent India and secure a medal. It's crucial to stay away from drugs, as they may offer short-term benefits but have serious long-term consequences," she added.

Sainyam Vij, a silver medalist in the Women's 10m Air Pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2026, also supported the anti-drug initiative, urging everyone to embrace a healthy lifestyle. "This 'Nasha-mukt' (Drug-free) initiative is commendable, and I encourage everyone to participate," she stated.

Angel Yadav, who secured a bronze medal in the women's 48 kg category at the Asian Junior Championships Individuals 2026, reflected on her journey in Judo, stating, "Winning a medal at the Asian Championship was a remarkable experience, and being honored separately made it even more special."

The walkathon aimed to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of drug abuse and promote wellness among the community.
