Punjab Governor Highlights State Achievements Amid Political Tensions

Governor's Address on State Progress

Punjab's Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria, emphasized the state's accomplishments over the past year during a media briefing on Friday. He particularly noted the efforts to combat substance abuse and improve education. The Governor stated that meetings of village committees have led to a significant reduction in drug-related activities. He mentioned that approximately 41,000 individuals have been arrested as part of the government's ongoing anti-drug campaign.

Education and Political Criticism

Highlighting the advancements in education, the Governor remarked that Punjab's top position in this sector is a noteworthy achievement. However, the government has faced severe criticism from the opposition. Pratap Singh Bajwa, the leader of the opposition in Punjab, dismissed the Governor's statements as a "bundle of lies," claiming that both the finance minister and the president of the Aam Aadmi Party left the assembly during the Governor's address.

Political Divisions and Upcoming Budget Session

Bajwa criticized the state administration's governance and welfare operations, labeling it a failed government, and predicted that this would be their last budget in Punjab. The conflicting statements reflect the growing political divide in the state ahead of upcoming elections. While the ruling party is showcasing its achievements in law enforcement and education, the opposition is questioning the government's credibility and performance, particularly regarding governance and transparency.

Details on the Upcoming Budget Session

On Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that the state assembly's budget session will take place from March 6 to March 16, with the budget for 2026-27 to be presented on March 8. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema will present the budget in the assembly.

Plans for 'Meri Rasoi' Scheme

Earlier, during a press conference in Chandigarh, the Chief Minister stated that the decision to hold the budget session was made based on the Business Advisory Committee's recommendations, and the session could be extended if necessary. He also announced the 'Meri Rasoi' scheme for 4 million families, under which the state government will distribute ration kits.
