Internal Dynamics of Punjab Congress Explored

On Saturday, Bhupesh Baghel, the general secretary in charge of Punjab Congress, asserted that there are no objections regarding decisions made by the party leadership in the state. Following a significant meeting lasting approximately 80 minutes at the residence of senior Congress leader and MLA Rana Gurjeet in Chandigarh, Baghel stated that the party is united and functioning well. However, tensions within the party became evident through statements from close associates of Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi.

The crucial meeting included Channi and his supporting leaders, while the state Congress president, Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding, was notably absent. Immediately after the meeting, Baghel departed for Raipur, with Raja Wadding driving the car. On July 1, Congress announced that Raja Wadding would continue as the president of the Punjab unit, while Channi was appointed as the head of the election campaign committee. Channi, reportedly unhappy about not being made the state president, had not met with Baghel prior to this gathering.

Following the meeting, senior leader and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa mentioned that the sentiments of the workers had been communicated to the leadership, indicating that sometimes the party needs to reconsider its decisions. Randhawa hinted that Channi's faction does not accept Raja Wadding's leadership. He emphasized the need for a fearless leader who can firmly address the issues of corruption and deteriorating law and order under the Aam Aadmi Party's governance in Punjab, stating that they require a leader who speaks assertively rather than one who compromises.

In response to Randhawa's comments, Raja Wadding remarked that he and Randhawa have been collaborating for a long time. He insisted that there should be no 'sleeper cells' or compromising leaders within Punjab Congress. Wadding noted that several leaders have faced allegations of secret meetings with other parties, asserting that Punjab does not need such conciliatory figures. Baghel also agreed, stating that if any leader collaborates with the BJP, AAP, or any other party, it would not be acceptable, and he would not allow it as the in-charge.

The meeting was attended by Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Pratap Singh Bajwa, and former Deputy Chief Minister O.P. Singh. When asked if he accepted Wadding's leadership, Channi replied that all issues would be discussed in the meeting, and they would assess the situation as it unfolds. Baghel clarified that there was no discussion about removing Raja Wadding or declaring Channi as the chief ministerial face for the upcoming elections; their sole aim is to establish a Congress government in the state.
