Punjab CM Pays Tribute to Martyr Udham Singh on His 87th Martyrdom Day

Honoring the Legacy of Udham Singh

On Friday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reaffirmed the commitment of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to fulfill the dreams of freedom fighters who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. Speaking at a state-level event commemorating the 87th martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh, Mann emphasized that the unparalleled patriotism and sacrifice of this great revolutionary will continue to inspire generations to selflessly serve the country. He expressed that the nation will always remain indebted to this great martyr.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister paid his respects by laying flowers at the Udham Singh memorial and offered a tribute. He also shared a heartfelt message on social media, stating, "On the martyrdom day of the great revolutionary Shaheed Udham Singh, who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, I pay my humble respects. His unique sacrifice for the honor and dignity of the nation will always serve as a source of inspiration for all of us."

A Day of Pride and Remembrance

While addressing the gathering, Mann remarked that Shaheed Udham Singh made the ultimate sacrifice for India's freedom. He expressed pride and satisfaction in being part of this solemn event honoring the great martyr. The Chief Minister highlighted that countless brave sons and daughters of the country sacrificed their lives during the struggle for independence, dedicating themselves to creating an equitable society for the welfare of the marginalized and underprivileged.

Reflecting on Udham Singh's legacy, Mann stated that the gathering was a moment to express deep gratitude to the great patriot and to remember the day of his martyrdom. He recalled the heinous act committed by the British government at Jallianwala Bagh, where hundreds of unarmed and innocent Indians were brutally shot under the administration of the then Lieutenant Governor of undivided Punjab, Michael O'Dwyer.

Udham Singh's Act of Vengeance

Mann noted that Shaheed Udham Singh ensured that Michael O'Dwyer faced justice in London’s Caxton Hall. On March 13, 1940, he shot O'Dwyer to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. He was executed at the age of 40 in London's Pentonville Prison on July 31, 1940. While paying homage at the Udham Singh memorial in a local stadium, Mann laid a floral tribute to the great freedom fighter.
