Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is once again embroiled in a political scandal, as opposition figures challenge his behavior during the current legislative assembly session.
The situation intensified on Friday when Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition, accused the Chief Minister of possibly being under the influence of alcohol while participating in the assembly discussions. Bajwa demanded immediate alcohol and drug testing for Mann and all assembly members, asserting that such actions are essential to uphold the institution's integrity.
Further fueling the controversy, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, who recently distanced herself from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), echoed these claims on social media. She shared a video of Mann speaking in the assembly and insisted on a formal alcohol test, warning that any confirmed misconduct should lead to severe constitutional repercussions.
Maliwal did not hold back in her criticism, alleging that Mann has frequently attended various official, religious, and international events while allegedly intoxicated. She also questioned his past commitments, casting doubt on his credibility and ability to govern a sensitive border state like Punjab.
This incident unfolds amid a significant political shift involving Maliwal, who, along with other Rajya Sabha members, has recently aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party after leaving AAP. Her split from the party traces back to last year, following accusations of assault involving an aide of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, a claim she has consistently reiterated.
This is not the first instance where Mann has faced such allegations. In 2022, opposition parties claimed he was removed from a flight in Germany due to intoxication, allegations that were firmly denied by the ruling party at that time.
While the Chief Minister and his party have not yet provided a comprehensive response to the latest claims, this controversy has reignited discussions about political accountability and the standards expected from public officials. It raises a broader question within political circles: can effective governance be maintained when leadership is frequently scrutinized for personal behavior?
As the assembly session progresses, attention is focused on how the government will react to the increasing pressure from the opposition and whether this issue will escalate into a larger political conflict.
