Meeting Highlights Between Punjab CM and Home Minister

On Saturday, Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address various issues related to the international border and other pending matters concerning the state. Mann emphasized that Punjab's rights have been clearly presented to the central government. After the meeting, he informed reporters that a significant topic of discussion was the rehabilitation of agricultural land located across the border fence.

Mann requested a review of the existing border fence, which has isolated substantial agricultural land between the fence and the actual international boundary. This situation has created difficulties for farmers, who are compelled to farm their land under strict security protocols with the Border Security Force (BSF) after showing identification.

He stated that if the fence were to be realigned, thousands of acres would fall within Indian territory, allowing farmers to cultivate their land without fear or restrictions. Mann noted that Shah responded positively and assured him that a decision would be made regarding this matter, for which he expressed gratitude. He reiterated that this is a right of Punjab, not a favor, and highlighted the positive stance taken by Shah on the international border issue.

Mann further explained that there are areas where farmers must show their ID to the BSF to access their fields. He suggested that moving the fence 200-300 kilometers further could bring thousands of acres of land within reach, enabling farming without security concerns or restrictions. He expressed appreciation for the consideration given to his request.

Regarding the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, Mann mentioned that the matter is currently under review by the Supreme Court, and the state has appointed the best legal representation. He reiterated Punjab's position, stating that the state does not have excess water and believes that the dispute should be resolved through dialogue or other appropriate means. The Chief Minister also raised concerns about food grain storage and requested special trains to clear the state's rice stocks in preparation for the upcoming wheat procurement. He noted that Punjab is expected to supply 12.5 million metric tons of wheat to the country, necessitating adequate storage facilities.
